<Recycle Bin>

<System Page File>

The swap file (virtual memory). This file is controlled by Windows and is a volatile cache of data on your hard drive. This cache is used to supplement your computer's main memory (RAM). When your computer runs out of memory, it uses the page file.  Because this file's content changes so quickly, it is not useful in a backup or restore. If your system drive is lost, Windows will rebuild this file if necessary.

C:\_Restore

Users of Norton System Works and Norton Antivirus should avoid copying the '_Restore' folder created by these programs.  There is a problem if you include this folder backing up a primary C:\ drive.  If you have a '_Restore' directory such as 'C:\_Restore' that is created by the software products mentioned above, it is suggested that the 'Omitted Paths' be applied for 'C:\_Restore\'.  It appears that the 'TEMP' folder will contain duplicate copies of certain data each time that you run a backup, and it will grow each time you run the backup unless these paths are omitted.  If you wish to copy the 'C:\_Restore' directory (or similar directories), this should be done with a separate operation.

?:\System Volume Information (where '?' represents all drives)

The System Volume Information folder is a hidden, system folder that the Windows XP System Restore tool uses to store its information and restore points. There is a System Volume Information folder on every partition on your computer. Since these folders are drive and partition related, it is not necessary for Double Image to copy these folders.

hiberfil.sys

Windows uses the hiberfil.sys file for system hibernation. This file is not needed on the target drive and not needed for a restore.

pagefile.sys

The pagefile.sys file is how Windows handles virtual memory using demand paging where demand paging is essentially a way that the operating system can substitute space on the hard disk for actual RAM. It is unnecessary to copy this large file to a target drive. If the target drive is used as a boot drive, then Windows will build a new pagefile.sys.  This file is not needed on the target drive and not needed for a restore.

Windows\Prefetch

The \Windows\Prefetch folder theoretically allows Windows to load recently used applications more quickly. This file is not needed on the target drive and not needed for a restore.
